Brian Godfrey

DIRECTOR OF RACQUET SPORTS, PTR

Brian is a dedicated and accomplished tennis player and coach, with a passion for teaching the game to all levels. He began his tennis journey at Holy Spirit High School, where he started his freshman year as #2 singles, and quickly became the #1 Varsity singles player the following 3 seasons. Eager to continue perusing competitive tennis, Brian enrolled at Division III Wesley College in Dover Delaware, where he once again claimed the #1 Varsity singles position, as well as #1 Doubles throughout his four years there.

Since 2009, Brian has been an integral part of the Greate Bay community, first serving as an instructor, then quickly moving to Head Junior Coordinator for all Tennis Programming the past 14 years.

Due to all of Brian’s hard work and dedication, he was promoted to the position of Director of Racquet Sports this past September. Brian happily accepted and was ready to take on this new role.

In this new role, Brian oversees all racquet sports. These include coordination of all Junior/Adult tennis clinics, pickleball clinics/open plays, squash, as well as continuing to teach all Junior programs.

All while still offering private lessons upon request.

Brian’s dedication is evident as he works tirelessly to enhance all programming, as well as the skills of his players at all levels, starting from juniors and extending to adults.

Brian McHugh

HEAD ADULT PRO, PTR

Brian McHugh’s tennis journey began at Ridley High School, where he discovered his passion for the sport. He then continued his tennis career at Waynesburg College, competing at the Division 3 level. After taking a break from tennis for 15 years, Brian made a triumphant return to the game as a player, where he actively participated in tournaments in Brigantine, Margate, and Ocean City.

Driven by his love for tennis and a desire to share his knowledge, he started coaching at Stockton Tennis Club in 2017 and Holy Spirit High School Boys & Girls Tennis from 2019 to 2023. Brian’s dedication to tennis instruction then extended to the Great Bay Racquet Club. His commitment to professional development led him to obtain PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) certification in 2021, ensuring that he stays current with the latest coaching techniques and methodologies.

With a wealth of experience and a love for the game, he continues to inspire and shape the lives of tennis players at various levels, leaving a lasting impact on the tennis community.

Susan Safer

PTR

Susan Safer grew up locally in Margate City, New Jersey playing tennis since she was younger. She went to Holy Spirit High School playing on the tennis team for four years before graduating. After graduating high school she began teaching children tennis, and has been for over 30 years now. Along with teaching tennis, Susan is a Special Education teacher.

Susan has been teaching at Greate Bay Racquet and Fitness for 10 years now. She teaches our youth tennis clinics througout the year along with offering private lessons, and participating in tennis contracts. 

Outside of our facility, Susan puts together and runs both teen and adult tennis tournaments throughout the state. She also instructs children tennis clinics and camps outside in Margate alongside Brian Godfrey throughout the summer!

Chris Mellon

USPTA

Chris Mellon is a highly accomplished tennis coach and player with a storied career spanning over two decades. In 2023, she was inducted into the Mainland Regional High School Hall of Fame, recognizing her instrumental role in leading the boys’ tennis team to a state championship in 1997. With a passion for developing athletes, she has served as an assistant coach for the Mainland Regional High School girls’ tennis team for 11 years and as head coach of the boys’ tennis team for two years, earning one New Jersey State title and six South Jersey championships.

Chris’s coaching expertise is shaped by working under the legendary 10-time NCAA Division I champion coach Frank X. Brennan, including one year at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and five years at the prestigious The Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey. A United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) certified professional for over 25 years, she combines elite-level experience with a dedication to inspiring and mentoring the next generation of athletes.

Anthony DiCosola

ADULT & JUNIOR PRO

Anthony is a former USPTA Certified Level P-1 tennis professional with over 25 years of coaching experience across top tennis clubs and academies nationwide. A standout high school player at Holy Spirit High School, Anthony was a four-year Cal Division Champion, earning All South Jersey and All Conference honors in doubles. He continued his collegiate tennis career at Rider University and Pfeiffer College before transitioning into coaching and player development.

Throughout his career, Anthony has trained players of all ages and levels, from pee-wee beginners to advanced juniors. He has held key coaching positions at Randi Mani Tennis Academy in New York, Beverly Hills Tennis Club in Los Angeles, and Claremont Resort and Spa in Berkeley, where he worked alongside ATP Pro Wayne Ferreira and USPTA Master Pro Rosie Bareis. His programs emphasize athletic development, proper technique, and a lifelong love for the game. Anthony holds an Associate of Arts in General Education from Berkeley City College and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies/Childhood Studies from California State University, East Bay.

Katelyn Treat

JUNIOR PRO

Katelyn began her tennis career with Egg Harbor Township High School in 2011 where she quickly moved up to 1st Singles her sophomore year. She was the Cape Atlantic League singles runner-up in 2013, and the singles champion in 2014. She led her high school tennis team to 3 conference championships during her 3 year tenure.

After high school, she then moved on to play for the Gwynedd Mercy University’s Women’s Tennis Team where she played both 1st Singles and 1st doubles. She made an immediate impact on her team during her freshman season and assisted them in winning the CSAC Conference Championship. Katelyn was awarded both Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year her freshman season. With continued success she was awarded 1st Team all-conference in both singles and doubles, as well as player of the year every season. During her tenure, the Griffins obtained 3 CSAC Conference Championships along with 3 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament appearances. With an overall collegiate record of 94-9, she was inducted as a member of the 25th Anniversary Team.

Katelyn began coaching tennis in Ocean City, NJ during high school. She has always loved working with kids of all ages and skill levels. During college, she coached at the Fort Washington Swim & Tennis Club and would also assist in programs such as special olympics.
